The Wombles – Title Sequence
Yes, further to my previous post about the title sequence to Adam Faith’s Budgie, here’s a link to a clip of The Wombles on youtube.
When it opens up, I love how an old discarded rusted cooker has written on it the title “The Wombles by Elizabeth Beresford”. It doesn’t jar at all, you just accept it. And then the door opens up by itself and you see the words “as told by Bernard Cribbens” typed on the inside of the oven in what looks like a Pica type – it flows well, it’s a magic you just accept.
And then you see the Wombles collecting rubbish, and we’ve got the credits written on some junk – “Decor by Barry Leith” on what could be an old crumpled baked bean tin, and “Edited by Martin Bohan” on what could be an empty bottle of cough mixture.
A lovely playing about with reality, as if the characters are for a moment aware that they’re in a television programme. And they just accept it.
Then we go into the programme proper, and the theme is football, so at the end we get “The End” written on a football, and then it turns by itself to show “FilmFair London” on the other side.
Lovely.
